Basic cut-out sugar cookies turn into elegant party favors or dessert table items once decorated with icing. I made a bunch of these baby boy shoe cookies as favors for a modern baby shower.

It all starts with a fresh batch of cookie dough made using thoughtfully sourced ingredients and icing that is made from scratch. Cookies are baked in small batches for consistency and made to order; I don’t freeze them, even though the cookie dough and undecorated or decorated cookies can be frozen successfully. If you need to freeze your decorated sugar cookies, pack then individually in freezer bags then store layered on top of each other in a tightly sealed plastic container. Simply defrost on the counter for a couple of hours before use, never in the refrigerator.
