Something Sweet Has Arrived: Hello Baby Brunch

Today we have a “Welcome Baby” brunch hosted by a loving grandma in honor of baby Kristian.  The event took place at True Food Kitchen, a venue that offered the ideal setting.  Can we talk about the greenery marquee letters, wood paneling and yellow Tolix chairs?  It’s perfection!

First things first, keeping up with the venue’s urban modern-rustic vibes, mama to Kristian incorporated DIY elements in blue, yellow and white to built-up a gender-neutral theme; including, but not limited to, the cutest personalized French macaron favor boxes. Walter’s Flowers was behind the floral arrangements.

The restaurant’s friendly staff was there with sweet sips, nibbles and delicious food for everyone to enjoy.  I instantly loved the charred cauliflower in harissa-tahini sauce with medjool date, herbs and pistachio. I could also hear others raving about the finger-licking good grass-fed burger.

The sweets table featured an array of desserts nestled amongst a balloon backdrop put together by, once again, our talented mama.  Grown-ups devoured slices of chocolate mousse ganache cake from Aux Delices bakery as kids munched on pretty and playful Dots Cupcakes.  You could also find an assortment of baklava, European butter cookies and chocolate bonbonnière.

Now, can you imagine how happy I was when asked to make a couple of desserts?

I knew I was baking and decorating cookies long before this little one was born and had an inkling of an idea.  The rest, not a clue!  It was a week full of surprises which left me with two working days to wrap up my other treats.  Nonetheless I managed to whip up some cuteness.

About these cookies of mine!  It all started with a wooden crate wagon planter I picked up from Target.  I wanted them square, have a wet-on-wet iced base using two semi-monochromatic colors and finished off with baby’s name piped in complementing styles.  Since I had full creative control I also wanted it to reflect my aesthetic.

Cake popsicles are kind of a must have for events these days.  Luscious lemon cake with vanilla bean buttercream covered in white chocolate and decorated with fondant polka dots.

These mini dessert cups are inspired by chef Christina Tosi and Momofuku Milk Bar’s birthday layer cake.  A made-from-scratch sweet funfetti cake layers brushed with cake soak then layered with frosting and crisp rainbow cookie crumb.  OK seriously, this is a ton of work and assembly was a bit of a pain as well – but well worth it.

We also had chocolate dipped mini donuts baked from scratch.  That pretty much covers it all.

Can you ever get enough of moments like this? I sure don’t.  Feeling all warm and fuzzy writing this post and reminiscing about that weekend surrounded by family. You are loved baby boy!
